Great Western Marketplace Provides Booth To Promote Amateur Radio
Northwest Reno has just gotten a brand new shopping spot and amateur radio has gained a very nice venue from which to showcase ham radio, courtesy of the Great Western Marketplace.
Just one week after their Grand Opening on Black Friday, Great Western Marketplace showed that they are here to support the community when they donated one of their retail studios to the Washoe County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (WCARES) as a tool to promote emergency preparedness and amateur radio.
Situated near West McCarran and I-80, the facility was once a Super Kmart which was shuttered six years ago. The site was purchased by the Naumann family of Reno, who renovated the complex to serve as an incubator for approximately 300 small retail businesses, cafes, and boutiques.

Sixty local vendors are already conducting business from the location with several more scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.
The WCARES/Washoe County Regional Operations Center space measures 200 square feet. Half of this space they will use and the other half is being made available to visiting ham radio and non-profit groups such as CERT, SNARS, Red Cross, and SATERN.
Washoe County ARES Public Information Officer Randall Lorenz said that the group plans to use the space for community outreach and other activities, "We will be holding Field Day there as well as classes, giving tests and many other preparedness programs."
Great Western Marketplace, located at 4855 Summit Ridge Drive is opened each week Friday and Saturday 10:00 AM- 5:00 PM and on Sunday from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
Other ham radio groups wishing to utilize the space may contact Bob Miller or Randall Lorenz to make arrangements.
