Former ARRL Director Howard Mark K3HM is Silent Key
Las Vegas area hams are saddened by the news of the passing of Howard Mark K3HM, age 81, of Burnsville, Minnesota. Mark suffered a non-recoverable head injury in a fall last week and succumbed to the effects. Prior to his fall he had been in declining health.
K3HM was a former ARRL Director and a Vice-Director. Before relocating to Minnesota in 2010 Mark lived in Las Vegas for 17 years where he was an active part of amateur radio in Southern Nevada.
He was a member of the Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club and held various leadership roles within that organization. He was also the clubs long time Net Control Operator.
Anyone who attended an LVRAC meeting during the years Howard Mark was a member will remember that during roll call and whenever Mark's name or callsign was mentioned all in attendance would shout out, in unison, "The Voice of Summerlin", (editors note: Summerlin is a master planned community in the western portion of the Las Vegas valley)
Howard Mark, who previously held call sign WØOZC, was appointed in 1984 to fill a vacancy as the ARRL Vice-Director of the Dakota Division. He served in that capacity until 1990 when he succeeded Dakota Division Director Tom Olson who was elected as the ARRL International Affairs Vice President. Mark held the Director position from 1990 until 1993. In 1993 he relocated to Las Vegas and resigned as Director. In accordance to ARRL By-Laws his is Vice-Director Rick Whiting WØTN became the Dakota Division Director.
Howard Bennett Mark, who was a ham operator for 58 years, was married to Margaret "Margi" Mark. Their marriage lasted for 52 years until Howards passing.
While in Southern Nevada K3HM routinely organized LVRAC's participation in Public Service activities such as the Las Vegas Marathon, Baker to Vegas Challenge, and the American Diabetes Associate 'Tour de Cure'. He also served as Net Control operator for these and many more events.
