SATERN Working to assist the Salvation Army in Pahrump
Salvation Army has a 150 year record of service
Behind a very familiar shield of crimson red, stands a legion of men and women who are poised and ready to attack. Unlike most combatants, these warriors do not battle their fellow man, instead their struggle is against those things that harm mankind.
For 150 years the people of the Salvation Army have worked to eliminate the suffering brought on by poverty, substance abuse, imprisonment, war, and by natural and man-made disasters.
Both a religious and charitable organization, the Salvation Army. as its name implies, is loosely structured along military lines. The Salvation Army first provided disaster relief in the United States during the devastating Galveston Hurricane of 1900. The people behind the Red Shield have responded to virtually every disaster since then.
Today when disasters strike, the response is handled by the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Service (EDS). EDS is sanctioned as a disaster relief and assistance organization with people and equipment in 126 countries.
Amateur Radio Aids those that are "Doing The Most Good"
A crucial need for any disaster response is reliable communications.
SATERN, an acronym for the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network, is the communications arm of the Salvation Army's Emer-gency Disaster Service.
Composed entirely of volunteer amateur radio operators, SATERN was founded in 1988 by Major Patrick McPhearson. Around 4,600 SATERN hams donate their time and resources to assist the Salvation Army in it's mission.
Las Vegas SATERN assists in Pahrump
Recently, two SATERN representatives from Las Vegas, Clark County SATERN Coordinator Calvin Groom KE6OEH and ARRL Assistant Director John Bigley N7UR travelled to Pahrump, Nevada to meet with the officers and members of the Pahrump Corp of the Salvation Army.
The Corp has received a donation of some amateur radio equipment, including a transceiver and a antenna tower. However they are in need of technical assistance in setting up their station.
The Pahrump Corp is under the leadership of Lieutenants Tim and Kim Brown who hail from Australia. Lt. Tim Brown, accompanied by Leo Marchetti AD7DP showed the visitors the tower equipment and the location of the planned radio room. The visitors also met with a group of youngsters who, along with Lt. Brown, are eager to begin studying for their Technician Class licenses.
As the Holiday Season is rapidly approaching, plans call for Bigley and Groom to being travelling to Pahrump in January to teach the licensing classes. In the mean time Bigley is assisting in the engineering and construction permitting process to begin the tower installation.
